Self-Directed vs. Independent

What does it mean to be Self-Directed?
-To be Self-Directed means you have the ability to pull yourself away from your social life and finish your work (direct yourself) without being told, once or multipul times.

How is that different from being Independent?
-being independent is having the ability to be by yourself and not get bored. You also are not influenced by the media and socialization around you, you are yourself. Your independent self.

What are some examples of self-direction?
-I, personally, am not the most self-directed. I need to be told to do my homwork because I forget about it. A lot of the time, it is late too.
-I can be self-directed though, and one of the times was on what at my school we call Walkabout days. Walkabout days are days without classes and meetings get scheduled to propose or wrap projects we do. On a few walkabout days, I get distracted and don't do work. But, there are definitely days that I do all of my work. I have meetings the I scheduled, that my Triad scheduled and that my friends want me to go to. One day, I had gone to about 3-4 meetings, got homework done AND wrote either a proposal or wrap up for a project i had, and researched it!

How can you connect blogging to self-direction?
-Blogging is definitely a self-directed because we are supposed to do our homework at home, or at school. and online. since it is online, we have to make sure we dont get distracted in the process of writing our blog (by facebook and such).

  1. How do your different actions (being self-directed and independent vs. NOT) make you feel? I sometimes have to remind myself that I feel better when I am productive!

  2. I agree with Sarah, but I know how much fun it can be to get distracted, too! I am a touch on the crazy side when I check things off my to-do list. However, I am similar to you in the way that sometimes I just don't feel like working when I'm told to work. For example, a teacher may say, "Read Chapter 1. We will talk about it in 20 minutes." UGH! What if I don't FEEL like working right now?? Sadly, I think we need to compromise sometimes and that can be hard. I had to do that in a meeting after school today. I couldn't stop thinking that I'd rather be walking around the lake with my dog....
